bogged down

Video 348.

Hello everybody! Welcome back to E3 (E-cubed). We have a very, very useful expression. Sometimes people ask you to do something. Send you an email, you know, wash dishes, answering text, whatever, they ask you to do something, but you forget and you forget or you can’t do it immediately because you’re so busy. There is some other work that is taking all of your time and you forget. So the husband or the wife is at work, working, working, working, and they get a text and “I love you honey” and they’re working, working, working, and then 20 minutes later “What’s wrong? Don’t you love me?” “Of course I love you, I’m busy”. This is the expression to use: bogged down. To be bogged down. It means to be overburdened with work. You got so much work. You cannot do anything outside of the work, you bogged down. You get much work. Ah, it’s terrible. Now this is a bog, yeah, it’s a field where they grow cranberries and it’s like a marsh. Do you know what a marsh is? M-a-r-s-h.  Check the dictionary. Can you imagine walking through a marsh? Is it easy to walk through a bog or a marsh? No, it’s very difficult. It’s very heavy and very tough. That’s the idea. You’re bogged down. You’re in a marsh, a bog, a work, it was very difficult do anything, but you have to get through the work. You have to get through the bog, the marsh. Did you understand? Bogged down. A great phrasal verb. Let’s check out the dialogue:

Why didn’t you text me back?
I’m sorry, I was busy.
Didn’t you see it?
I did, but I was so bogged down at that time.
You don’t love me?
Ugh!!!

This is Mário, from Brazil. I dictated the first part of the video as well the dialogue. Now it’s your turn. Listen to the Coach Shane’s explanations and transcribe the second part. Coach Shane’s videos are the best way to learn English. I like to watch the e-cubed videos but he has other channels in YouTube. Do a search. If you understand Portuguese, translate it. It is an excellent exercise.

TRADUÇÃO LIVRE PARA O PORTUGUÊS

Atolado, abarrotado

Você não me ama?" “Claro que eu te amo, eu estou ocupado.” Esta é a expressão de uso: atolado. Estar atolado, abarrotado.

Você não me ama?
Argh!

Aqui é o Mário, do Brasil. Ouça as explicações do Professor Shane e transcreva a segunda parte.
