Zip it (video 330).

Hello everybody! Welcome back to E³ (E-cubed). Ah, boy. Today’s a good expression. Many students like to they ask or sometimes they don’t ask, but they say shut up. Shut up! Shut up! Shut up means keep your mouth closed, be quiet. However, personally, I really don’t like the word shut up. It’s very strong and among friends as a joke maybe it’s possible, but I recommend you try not using shut up, unless you’re very angry, okay? If somebody saying something they shouldn’t be and you angry, shut up! That’s possible. So, today we have a different expression that you can use and it is more fun and it’s more useful. You can say: zip it. Zip it. And the idea is zip as a zipper. Zip the lips. That’s the idea. Zip it. It refers to the lips, which are essentially one, and we say zip the lips, zip the mouth, zip it. Be quiet. Okay? In a business meeting, zip it not so good. Be quiet would be the most, one of the most polite ways to tell someone to shut up, but zip it is a fun expression. Zip it! Alright, let’s listen to the dialogue. I have to zip it, we need to listen to a dialogue:

I think your idea is terrible.

Be quiet.

Cala a boca! Cala a boca significa mantenha sua boca fechada, fique quieto. No entanto, pessoalmente, eu realmente não gosto da palavra shut up. É muito forte e entre amigos como uma brincadeira talvez seja possível, mas eu recomendo que você não use shut up, a menos que você está muito zangado, está bem? Se alguém diz algo que não deveria dizer, e você está com raiva, shut up! (cala a boca!). Isso é possível. Então, hoje nós temos uma expressão diferente, que você pode usar e é mais divertida e é mais útil. Você pode dizer: Zip it (fecha a boca). Zip it (fecha a boca). E a ideia é zip como um zíper.
