Hello everybody!

Welcome back to E3 (E-cubed).

Today we have a request, actually all of our videos are requests, but this has been a very common request. It’s raining cats and dogs. So, I know almost every English student in the world has studied this expression. “It’s raining cats and dogs” means meow, auau. No, it means “it’s raining lots”, it’s raining a huge amount, lots and lots of rain coming down. It’s raining cats and dogs. However, let me be honest. I am 45 years old, yeah, before the sixth this year, and in my 45 years of life, I don’t think I’ve ever used this expression outside of an English class. Maybe I have, it’s possible, I know the expression, I’ve seen it, I guess I must have heard it, somewhere, maybe not, but this is not a very common expression, but everybody does know it. So, in America, if you want to use this expression, you should try and use it perhaps in a humor style. As you say it, you could say, uh, it’s raining cats and dogs, and laugh. If you’re serious, oh, it’s raining cats and dogs. It’s kind silly. That’s my opinion. I’m curious as to what other Americans might say. Do they use it a lot? Do they agree with me? I’m curious. Anyway, it is a well-known expression, but not used that much in real life in America. But anyway, let’s practice the dialogue:

HEY, MOM! HOW ARE YOU?
WHO IS THIS?
YOUR SON, SHANE.
OH, I’M FINE.
THAT’S GOOD. WHY IS IT SO LOUD THERE?
IT’S RAINING CATS AND DOGS!

Yeah, that was my last phone conversation with my mom. She didn’t recognize my voice. And she said “It’s raining cats and dogs.” That’s not true, but anyway, that’s the idea. If it’s raining cats and dogs, it will be loud, cause lots of raining coming down. I love the rain, but I don’t really like it when it’s raining cats and dogs. What about you? Now, thank you for watching the video this far, instead of it’s raining cats and dogs, what can we say? I’ll give you two or three expressions. Wow, it’s really raining! Very common. It’s raining buckets outside – b-u-c-k-e-t-s – and it’s really pouring out there! Pouring – p-o-u-r-i-n-g. Those three expressions are very common and I’m sure there are many more. Do you know another one? Leave it down below. That’s today’s e-cubed and I’ll see you again tomorrow. Bye, bye.

It’s raining cats and dogs.

Deixe-a lá embaixo. Tchau.
